EVERETT, Mass. – In a back-and-forth contest, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team (3-3-1, 2-2-1 CNE) knotted with Western New England (1-5-1, 0-4-1 CNE) by a 4-4 score Friday night. The Leopards grabbed the extra point in the conference standings by way of shootout, winning 3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth broke the ice just one minute into the night as Nolan Lowe potted a goal right on top of the crease on a pass from behind the net by Anthony Dalessio. Just 6:10 later, a two-on-one featuring Max Pineo and Nick Cullinan resulted in a back-door tap-in for Cullinan, pushing the lead to 2-1. 42 seconds later, Ethan Lim made it a 3-0 game, putting home a puck that bounced off the end boards and back out front.
- The Golden Bears cut the deficit to 3-1 just 1:08 into the second period as Brayden Patricia cashed in on a loose puck out front of Jack McGovern. WNE would score three goals following, all within a 3:36 span, including a high-slot tip by Nolan Dawson that gave the Golden Bears a 4-3 edge by the 17:46 mark of the second period.
- The Leopards spent much of the third frame attempting to knot the score, with a shot by Nikolas Sombrowski proving successful at the 6:17 mark. Both teams juked it out to force overtime, where nobody prevailed with only one shot apiece traded.
- The two teams traded two goals apiece through the first six rounds of the shootout until Cade Penney gave the Leopards a 3-2 edge in the seventh. McGovern stopped an attempt by Matthew Dougherty, earning Wentworth an extra point.
