GORHAM, Maine – Nikolas Sombrowski of the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team and Owen Arend of the Southern Maine Huskies traded two goals apiece as the Huskies edged the Leopards by a 4-3 score in non-conference play Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Southern Maine improves to 2-4-0 while Wentworth slips to 3-5-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless first period that featured a 10-5 shots-on-goal advantage for the Leopards, Wentworth struck twine at the 6:47 mark of the second period as Cade Penney ripped a shot to the back of the net from the point on the powerplay.
- The Huskies knotted the score at one aside just 22 seconds later as Arend scooped up the puck off a turnover and sank a shot into the goal mouth. Southern Maine took a 2-1 edge with just 1:59 left in the frame when Ethan McDuff finished off a nice passing play out front of the goal on the powerplay.
- Arend pushed the Huskies lead to 3-1 at the 13:33 mark of the third period with a breakaway tally. However, Wentworth cut the deficit to 3-2 when Sombrowski cleaned up a loose puck in the crease and put the rock home just 1:04 after the Huskies' goal.
- Southern Maine potted an empty-net goal with 1:46 left to play in the third before Sombrowski scored off a one-timer in the low slot to mark a 4-3 score with 32 seconds left. The Huskies fended off the Leopards' last attempt, with Kyle Penton making 24 saves in goal. Jack McGovern made 18 stops for Wentworth who held a 27-22 advantage in shots on goal.
SERIES NOTES:
- Today marked the fourth all-time meeting between the two teams.
