EVERETT, Mass. – George Kolovos found the back of the net with 34.6 seconds left in regulation to lift the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team to a 2-1 win over Nichols in Conference of New England action Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Leopards improve to 4-6-1 overall and 3-4-1 (10 points) in CNE play while the Bison fall to 4-5-2 (2-4-2; eight points).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Despite Wentworth controlling play early, it was Nichols that broke the ice with a goal at the 4:38 mark when Josh Dickson and Aaron Hamel set up Joey Allegrini, giving the Bison a 1-0 lead.
- Both teams continued to have chances throughout the period before Wentworth evened the score with a power-play goal from Desmond Johnson with 1:51 left in the frame. Nolan Lowe dug the puck out from a scrum behind the net and sent a pass to Nikolas Sombrowski. Sombrowski sent a pass to Johnson, whose one-timer found the back of the net.
- A scoreless second period saw both teams with seven shots on goal, including a late chance from Nichols' Luca Ricci that was saved by Jack McGovern and nicked the post.
- The Bison had three shot chances early in the third period, with McGovern stopping all three bids. Wentworth applied pressure and had four shots on goal on a power play and a fifth attempt blocked. However, Liam Choquette came up with four saves to keep the game tied.
- With the game appearing to be headed to overtime, Jesse Chamberlain set a pass to George Weiner, who fired the puck towards the net. Kolovos got a stick on it in front and put the hosts ahead, 2-1. For Kolovos, it was his second marker of the season with both coming as game winners.
- Nichols pulled Choquette after the goal for an extra attacker and won all three faceoffs. The Bison's lone shot attempt was blocked by Ian Worthley and sent out of the zone.
- McGovern made 19 saves while Choquette stopped 31 shots. Wentworth had a 33-20 shot advantage and was 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
