December 10, 2024
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Two goals from George Kolovos, who has accounted for the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team's (4-6-2) last three tallies, led the Leopards in a battle with the Salve Regina Seahawks (5-4-2) that ended with a 2-2 draw in non-conference play Tuesday night. Wentworth won the shootout, 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Seahawks broke the ice early in the first at the 3:28 mark as Arvega Hovsepyan rippled the twine to mark a 1-0 score. After much back-and-forth play, the Leopards knotted the score as George Kolovos found the back of the net with 9:33 to play in the frame.
- Aidan Connolly gave Salve Regina a 2-1 edge by the 5:13 mark of the second period before the two teams again traded a flurry of chances. However, the Leopards tied the score at two aside at the 16:47 mark with Kolovos grabbing his second tally of the game.
- Both teams traded opportunities in the third stanza, resulting in a 6-6 knot in shots on goal, until 60 minutes wasn't enough. In the overtime frame, Jack McGovern stopped all five shots he faced to force the shootout.
- In the shootout, Wentworth's first two shooters, Nikolas Sombrowski and Kolovos, found the back of the net, with McGovern denying both Seahawks attempts. The Leopards would go on to win the shootout, 2-1, as McGovern finished the night with 25 stops. Selby Warren made 22 saves in goal for the Seahawks.
SERIES NOTES:
- The Leopards own the all-time series, 28-16-6.
