WORCESTER, Mass. – In a back-and-forth affair, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team (4-7-2) came up short to the Assumption Greyhounds (9-8) by a 5-4 score in non-conference action Tuesday night.
Despite the loss, Topher Chirico made a career-high 46 saves in goal for the Leopards.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Greyhounds grabbed an early lead just 2:49 into the opening frame as Jonathan Surette wired one home on the powerplay. Just under ten minutes later, the Leopards knotted the score at one aside as Jesse Chamberlain fired his first collegiate goal to the twine.
- Wentworth took a 2-1 edge at the 4:41 mark of the second period as Nikolas Sombrowski rippled the cage. At the 13:05 mark, Assumption knotted the score yet again on the powerplay, with this tally off the stick of Daniel Lemanski.
- The Greyhounds scored two powerplay goals within a span of 1:54 early in the third period, taking a 4-2 lead on a second goal from Lemanski. George Kolovos potted the Leopards' third goal of the night to cut the deficit to 4-3 at the 10:33 mark.
- However, the Greyhounds would strike again against an empty cage with 16 seconds left in regulation to take a 5-3 advantage. Max Pineo led a comeback charge for Wentworth, scoring with just seven seconds left, but it was too little too late as the Leopards fell 5-4.
- Kolovos and Pineo led Wentworth with two points apiece while six Greyhounds also totaled multi-point outings. Michael Hauswirth made 35 saves for Assumption to preserve the win.
SERIES NOTES:
- The Leopards own the all-time series, 14-5-2.
