Kolovos, Men’s Ice Hockey Knock Off #10 Wilkes in Overtime
George Kolovos clutches second overtime winner of rookie season as Leopards down No. 10-ranked Colonels, 2-1
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – George Kolovos of the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team (5-8-2) played overtime hero yet again, potting the game-winner over No. 10-ranked Wilkes (9-5) in the consolation game of the Comfort Inn Complex Winter Classic on Sunday afternoon.
Kolovos' second overtime winner of the season and two goals in the game secured the Leopards a 3-2 triumph over the nationally ranked Colonels. Following his game-winner, Kolovos claimed a spot on the All-Tournament team.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Just after a powerplay try that proved to be unsuccessful, the Black & Gold struck first at the 7:55 mark of the first period with Ian Worthley finding the back of the net. The Colonels knotted the score at one aside just under five minutes later as Christian Blomquist rippled twine.
- Despite being outshot 16-9 in the second, Wentworth earned the second period's lone powerplay chance, firing six shots that all came up empty on Wilkes' goalkeeper Duncan Rolleman. Early in the third, however, the Leopards took a 2-1 edge as Kolovos twindled twine 5:18 into the frame.
- The Colonels did everything they could to claw back in the third, owning a slight edge in shots on goal before Miles Harrington put home the game-tying goal with the goalie pulled with just 1:38 left in regulation.
- The Leopards carried play in overtime, ripping three shots towards the goal mouth before a fourth from Kolovos found the back of the net at the 3:08 mark.
- Starting his second game in as many days, Jack McGovern made an impressive 46 saves en route to the win. Rolleman turned aside 25 shots for the Colonels in his first loss of the season.
