February 1, 2025
EVERETT, Mass. – Ethan Lim recorded a hat trick and Jack McGovern turned back 41 shots as the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team fended off a late charge by 14th-ranked Endicott, picking up a 4-2 win in Conference of New England play Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Leopards improve to 6-12-2 overall and 4-8-1 (14 points) in CNE play while the Gulls slip to 14-6-0 (11-2-0 (28 points).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- An early penalty on Wentworth gave Endicott a man advantage. During the power play, the Gulls put four shots on net, however, McGovern stood tall and came up with four saves. Shortly after the penalty was over, Endicott's Cade Baker took a shot that clanged off the pipe and kept the game scoreless.
- Wentworth's best chance of the period came in a shorthanded situation late in the period as Alex Walicki went in alone, however, was stopped on the breakaway by Ryan Wilson, ending the period at 0-0.
- Lim put the Black & Gold on the board with a marker 1:33 into the second period. Nikolas Sombrowski played the puck to Desmond Johnson, who found Lim for his third goal of the year. Endicott went on the power play midway through the period and had four shots on net, but McGovern came up with four saves.
- Seventy seconds after the penalty expired, the Leopards pushed their lead to 2-0 as Walicki and Anthony Dalessio teamed up to assist on a goal from Ian Worthley. Worthley factored into Lim's second of the contest as he and Sombrowski each had helpers on the goal at 16:16 that made it 3-0.
- At the 14:55 mark, Endicott's Brad Zona got the Gulls on the board as he scored off a feed from Cade Baker. With 3:58 left in the contest, Wilson was pulled for an extra attacker and, 1:48 later, the move paid off as Michael Casey won a faceoff and fed Ryan Willett, who beat McGovern to make it 3-2.
- Wilson was pulled again at 18:08 and Endicott nearly tied the game twice if not for McGivern between the pipes. With 15 seconds left, Lim iced the game as Nicholas Ramm chipped the puck out of the defensive zone to Lim, who potted the empty-net marker.
- Wilson made 18 saves as the Gulls held a 43-22 shot advantage. Wentworth successfully killed off four shorthanded situations.
