#5 Curry Edges Men's Ice Hockey, 1-0
Shorthanded tally makes difference in second period; Jack McGovern makes 24 saves in between the pipes
EVERETT, Mass. – A shorthanded tally in the second period was all it took for the No. 5-ranked Curry Colonels' men's ice hockey team as the Colonels clipped Wentworth Institute of Technology by a 1-0 score in Conference of New England play Friday night.
With the win, Curry boosts their overall marks to 18-3-0 and 12-2-0 in conference play. The Leopards slip to 6-13-2 (4-9-1 CNE) with four regular season dates remaining.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A relatively quiet first period featured a 9-6 shots edge for the Colonels. Both teams traded powerplay opportunities, with both coming up empty.
- Shorthanded in the second period, the Colonels cashed in on a two-on-one opportunity with Karim Gayfullin beating Jack McGovern across the crease at the 8:49 mark. Wentworth nearly tied it up with just under three minutes left in the frame as Anthony Dalessio came up empty on a breakaway try.
- The Leopards battled in the third, trying to carve out a goal to knot the score, with Ethan Lim ringing the post with just over four minutes to play. The Black & Gold held an 8-5 shots on goal advantage in the final frame.
- Shane Soderwall made 21 saves in a shutout bid for the Colonels. McGovern turned aside 24 shots for the Leopards.
SERIES NOTES:
- Tonight marked the 57th all-time meeting between the two teams.
