Nor'Easters blank Leopards, 3-0; Black & Gold head to the conference postseason as the sixth-seed
EVERETT, Mass. – A 13-save shutout from Stefan Carney propelled the No. 8-ranked University of New England Nor'Easters to a 3-0 Conference of New England win over Wentworth Institute of Technology Friday night.
The Nor'Easters finish the regular season with an overall mark of 18-6-1 and 14-4 in CNE play, good for the second-seed in the upcoming CNE Tournament. The Leopards wrap their regular season slate with a 7-16-2 overall mark (5-12-1 CNE). Both teams head for the postseason as the Black & Gold clinched the sixth and final spot tonight.
Prior to puck drop, the Leopards honored seniors Will O'Brien, George Weiner, and Mitch McGinn.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Nor'Easters struck just over three-quarters of the way through the opening frame as Cam Bergeman scooped up a loose puck and fed Drew Olivieri who ripped the puck to the top of the twine. Just 1:18 later, UNE doubled their lead as Nick Marino cashed in on a turnover just atop the crease of Jack McGovern.
- In the second period, the Leopards were awarded a five-minute major powerplay, however their chances came up empty. The Nor'Easters sealed the game in the third period as a streaking Ryan Kuzmich ripped a shot through the goal mouth with just 2:33 left to go.
- Carney posted 13 saves for the Nor'Easters while Olivieri led with two points. McGovern made 25 stops in goal for the Black & Gold, his 18th nod in goal on the season.
