Men's Lacrosse Cruises Past Emerson in Season Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – For the fourth consecutive season the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team picked up a win in its season opener. Paced by seven points from senior Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and six points from junior Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.), the Leopards defeated Emerson, 17-7, on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After Emerson took a 1-0 lead 50 seconds into the game on a goal from sophomore Skyler Celotto (Westport, Conn.), Wentworth rolled off six straight goals with two apiece coming from Coakley and Doner and single markers from sophomore Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) and sophomore Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.). Celotto netted his second of the game with eight seconds left to cut the lead to 6-2 after one quarter.
  • The Leopards took an 11-5 lead at the half as Coakley and Doner each scored twice in the second quarter and sophomore Zach Alexander (Franklin, Mass.) tallied once. Madden scored both of Wentworth's goals in the third quarter, sandwiched around a freshman Cameron McNeal (Los Angeles, Calif.) goal to make it 13-6 through three quarters.
  • Celotto scored his third of the game to open the fourth quarter and cut the lead to 13-7, however, Doner scored twice and Coakley and sophomore Nick Gore (Salem, N.H.) each scored once to help the Black & Gold pull away.
  • Doner (six goals, one assist), Coakley (five goals, one assist), and Madden (three goals) led the offense for Wentworth. Freshman Mason Gorman (Hanson, Mass.) and sophomore Radu Stancescu (Suffern, N.Y.) each scooped up three ground balls.
  • Celotto led Emerson with three goals and an assist.
  • Sophomore Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.) made three saves in his first collegiate start. The Leopards had a 42-18 shot advantage and a 15-13 ground ball advantage.

SERIES NOTES:

  • With the win, Wentworth improves to a perfect 6-0 against Emerson in the all-time series.
