First Half Run Helps Men's Lacrosse Triumph in Home Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) scored four goals and assisted on two others to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team (2-0) to a 14-5 victory over Emmanuel (0-1) on Saturday afternoon

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A minute and 25 seconds into the opening frame, Madden got the hosts on the board when he scored a man-up goal. Emmanuel evened the score on a goal from freshman Ryan Castle (Boxford, Mass.) a minute and 18 seconds later.
  • Junior Steven Russman (Troy, N.Y.) netted a goal with 9:52 left in the first quarter, igniting an 8-0 run for the Leopards. Sophomore Zach Alexander (Franklin, Mass.) scored three times during the run while Madden had two goals and an assist. Sophomore Colin Dickinson (Barre, Vt.) ended the Saints' scoring drought of 15:33 when he scored with 1:44 left in the half.
  • Alexander, Doner, and senior Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) each scored in the third quarter for Wentworth while Castle and freshman Derek DelVecchio (Saugus, Mass.) tallied for Emmanuel. Dickinson added his second for the Saints in the fourth quarter with freshman Liam Carroll (Brookfield, Conn.) and Russman each scoring for Wentworth.
  • In addition to Madden and Alexander, Doner and Russman each had two goals and two assists. Junior Danny Bartosiewicz (North Grafton, Mass.) and freshman Tyler Hearn (Holden, Mass.) each scooped up five ground balls and led the Leopards with four and three caused turnovers, respectively. Dickinson and Castle each scored twice for the Saints.
  • Sophomore Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.) made 12 saves in the win. Freshman Randy Castle (Boxford, mass.) made 21 saves for the Saints. At the X, the Leopards won 19-of-23 face-offs with junior Tom Rockwell (Andover, Mass.) winning 12-of-14 and sophomore Radu Stancescu (Suffern, N.Y.) winning 7-of-9. Wentworth had advantages in shots (54-25) and ground balls (45-37) and was 3-for-7 in man-up situations while killing off 4-of-4 shorthanded situations.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Today's game is the fifth all-time between the two schools with Wentworth, winners of the last two meetings, holding a 3-2 series edge.
