Men's Lacrosse Edged by Curry

MILTON, Mass. – Freshman Pat Modoono's (Billerica, Mass.) goal with 3:39 remaining in regulation held up as the game winner as the Curry College men's lacrosse team held off Wentworth Institute of Technology in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both squads.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After Curry took a 1-0 lead just 39 seconds into the contest, Wentworth tallied twice on goals from seniors Steven Russman (Troy, N.Y.) and Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.). The Colonels tied the game with 7:54 left, however, junior Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) and Russman scored to give the Leopards a 4-2 lead after the first 15 minutes.
  • Five different Curry players scored in the second quarter as the hosts regained the lead and took a 7-4 edge at the break.
  • Scoring for the first time in a span of 15:40, Wentworth pulled back within two on a goal from junior Zach Alexander (Franklin, Mass.), 30 seconds into the third quarter. The teams traded goals with freshman Schuyler Wetmore (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) netting his first career goal, a man-up goal with 9:04 left.
  • Junior Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) scored twice for the Black & Gold to pull Wentworth back within a goal (9-8) with 6:30 remaining. Modoono scored a man-up goal with 3:39 left giving the Colonels a 10-8 lead. However, with 1:53 remaining, Wentworth pulled back within one when Wetmore found Coakley for a man-up marker with 1:53 left.
  • Junior Radu Stancescu (Suffern, N.Y.) won the ensuing faceoff and picked up the ground ball. Wentworth called a time out and had a look at a tying goal attempt, however, a turnover allowed Curry to successfully clear the ball and run out the clock.
  • Prunier, Russman, and Coakley each had two goals for Wentworth. Senior Danny Bartosiewicz (North Grafton, Mass.) scooped up six ground balls and caused three turnovers. Junior Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.) made 18 saves.


SERIES NOTES:

  • Today marked the 22nd meeting between the two programs. Wentworth holds a 15-7 series advantage, however, Curry has been victorious in the last four meetings.
