HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Junior Calvin McKenna (Lake Tapps, Wash.) opened the scoring with 10:46 remaining in the quarter. The Bison responded with a pair of goals, just over two minutes apart from Brendan Coates and Hunter Ferreira.
  • The Leopards then tallied four straight goals, the first coming from McKenna. Senior Danny Bartosiewicz (North Grafton, Mass.) scooped up a loose ball and drove to goal for a man-up goal. Sophomore Liam Carroll (Brookfield, Conn.) and senior Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) tallied the third and fourth goals of the run which led to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Kyle Ettenhofer recorded a goal for Nichols just 39 seconds into the second quarter and the teams traded a goal each within the first four minutes of play. Freshman Matt Shultz (Pawling, N.Y.) and Connor Santoni found the cage in the trade. However, Coakley added a pair of his own to extend the Wentworth lead to four at 8-4 with 4:33 remaining in the half.
  • Nichols would add another goal late in a man-up situation by Thomas Astle and the teams headed to the break with the Leopards leading, 8-5.
  • McKenna opened the second half scoring to finish off his hattrick. Sophomore Tyler Hearn (Holden, Mass.) gave Wentworth a boost as he blocked away a shot towards a near empty Leopard cage. That gave junior Erik Madden (Ctr. Tuftonboro, N.H.) an opening to drive down the field and after a strong dodge found the back of the cage to give the Leopards a 10-5 lead.
  • Nichols responded less than two minutes later on a Colby Gillis goal. However, Wentworth got a pair of goals less than 10 seconds apart from each other as Madden found the back of the cage for the second time on the night. Junior Radu Stancescu (Suffern, N.Y.) won the ensuing faceoff and drove straight towards goal for his second goal on the season.
  • Nichols closed the gap with three straight goals from Astle and a pair from Ferreira, which came about six seconds apart from each other. McKenna added a third last minute goal in the third quarter which came to a close at 13-9 in favor of Wentworth.
  • Freshman Robbie Doorley got the lead back to five with his first career collegiate goal just 1:50 into the final period. Santoni and Coakley traded goals midway through before Ettenhofer tallied a goal late in the contest, which gave the Leopards a 15-11 victory.
