Men's Lacrosse Falls in Road Finale

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University men's lacrosse team outscored Wentworth Institute of Technology, 9-1 in the second half as the Hawks defeated the Leopards, 17-6, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Scoring twice in a span of 2:37, Roger Williams took an early 2-0 lead. However, senior Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) tallied twice less than five minutes apart to even the score at 2-all. The Hawks scored late in the quarter to take a 3-2 lead.
  • Roger Williams scored the first five goals of the second period and led, 7-2, with 12:32 left in the half. The Leopards clawed their way back, with a goal from junior Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.), and two from junior Nick Gore, making it 7-5 with 5:30 left. Roger Williams added man-up goal with 2:41 left and took an 8-5 lead at the break.
  • The Hawks scored all three goals in the third quarter before freshman Matt Shultz (Pawling, N.Y.) scored to make it 11-6. Roger Williams closed out the game on a 6-0 run.
  • Coakley had two goals and an assist while Gore found the back of the net twice and Shultz had a goal and an assist. Junior Radu Stancescu won 15 face-offs and scooped up six ground balls. Senior Danny Bartosiewicz (North Grafton, Mass.) picked up five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Junior Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.) made 22 saves.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Today marked the 35th all-time meeting between the two programs with the Hawks holding a 32-3 record.
