Men's Lacrosse Comes Back From Four Goal Deficit to Defeat Oneonta at Home

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team evened its record at 3-3, picking up a come from behind 7-6 victory over SUNY Oneonta Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

• After the teams played to a scoreless tie for the first several minutes of the game, the Red Dragons jumped on the Leopards with three goals in a span of 2:36, taking a 3-0 lead with 6:18 remaining. Vincent Tirino (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) scored the first goal of the game, and Dean Cannon (Clifton Park, N.Y.), who led all players with three goals, scored shortly after for Oneonta. After causing a turnover, the Red Dragons continued to pour on the offense, adding another goal with 3:14 to go to extend their lead to four. After graduate student defender Danny Bartosiewicz (North Grafton, Mass.) caused an Oneonta turnover, the Leopards finally got on the board, as freshman attack Jared Hiller (North Andover, Mass.) scored the first goal of his collegiate career to make it a 4-1 game. But in the final seconds of the first, following an initial save by senior goalkeeper Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.), the Red Dragons scored right at the horn to take a four goal lead into the second quarter.
• Following three shot attempts in the first five minutes that were unsuccessful, the Leopards again cut the deficit to three goals following a goal by senior midfielder Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H) with 9:56 remaining. Wentworth got a pair of shots off right after the goal, but were denied both times. The second period belonged to the goalies, however, as that would be the only goal scored prior to the half. Both Munroe and Oneonta's Jordan Berson (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) stopped everything that came their way following Madden's goal, as the Red Dragons took a 5-2 lead into the intermission
• The Leopards found their way right back into the game coming out of the break, courtesy of a goal by junior midfielder Calvin McKenna (Lake Tapps, Wash.). Wentworth then looked to their goalkeeper to keep them in the game, as Munroe made four saves in the third, keeping the Red Dragons off the scoreboard. The Leopards took advantage, striking with two goals in 49 seconds to tie the game late in the period. McKenna scored off an assist by Madden to got Wentworth within a goal, then Hiller added his second as well to tie the game with 2:17 to go, making it a 5-5 game going into the fourth quarter.
• Cannon scored his third of the game just 41 seconds into the fourth, as the Red Dragons took the lead right back. The score remained the same until just short of the midway point of the quarter. Following an Oneonta penalty, senior attack Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) scored to tie the game off an assist by Madden, picking up his ninth goal of the season and tying it at six. The Red Dragons took another penalty a few minutes later, and the Leopards again took advantage. This time it was sophomore attack Drew Bouley (Gloucester, Mass.) who scored, giving the Leopards their first lead of the game with 4:52 to play. Oneonta came back with a push in the final five minutes in an attempt to tie the game, getting away three shots. But Wentworth's defense held strong, keeping the Red Dragons from tying the game and picking up a 7-6 victory.

NOTES

• Oneonta outshot the Leopards 41-25, while the Red Dragons won the ground ball battle 35 to 21.
• Both teams were .500 in the faceoff circle, as each squad went 8-for-16. Wentworth was 22-for-27 on clears, while Oneonta was 19-of-22.

THE SERIES

• The two teams met for just the second time today, with the all-time series now tied 1-1.

NEXT 

• The Leopards now head back on the road, as they travel to Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) this Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
