BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Jack Burns (Clarksville, Md.) scored four points on three goals and an assist to help the Emerson College men's lacrosse team (1-1) edge Wentworth Institute of Technology, 11-9, in non-conference action Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth took a 2-0 lead, scoring just 14 seconds apart as senior Jack Wishart (Reading, Mass.) scored from junior Logan Maklan (Boca Raton, Fla.) at 12:00. On the ensuing faceoff, sophomore Erik Vogt (Warwick, N.Y.) scooped up the ground ball and went in alone. After Emerson trimmed the lead to 2-1, senior Liam Carroll (Brookfield, Conn.) scored to put the Leopards back up by two. A pair of Lions goals in the final 2:02 of the opening frame tied the game at 3-all.
  • Junior Drew Bouley (Gloucester, Mass.) scored two goals in a span of 2:21, sandwiched around an Emerson goal, gave Wentworth a 5-4 lead with 9:15 left. Senior Nicholas Fuglione (North Andover, Mass.) scored the hosts' next two goals to give Emerson a 6-5 lead at the break.
  • A low-scoring third quarter saw Emerson score twice in 12 seconds late to push their lead to 8-5. Carroll tallied a man-up marker with 59 seconds left, pulling the Black & Gold to within a pair (8-6) after three quarters of play.
  • Emerson brought its lead back to four on a goal 34 seconds into the fourth quarter, and another at the midway point of the frame. Vogt and Carroll scored within 10 seconds of each other, pulling the Leopards with two, and, after Emerson went ahead 11-8, Carroll scored his second man-up goal of the contest with 2:30 left. After an Emerson turnover and a Leopard shot that went high, a turnover gave the ball back to the Lions, who made successful clear to run out the clock.
  • Carroll finished with a game-high five points, coming on four goals and an assist. Bouley and Vogt scored two goals each for Wentworth, while Wishart scored a goal and added an assist. Freshman Samuel Silva (San Antonio, Texas) was 9-of-15 at the X and picked up four ground balls. Sophomore Ryan Kalberer (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) made 14 saves.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Leopards were 2-for-4 in extra-man opportunities and were successful in killing off all four of their shorthanded situations.
