Men's Lacrosse Powers Past Saint Joseph's

STANDISH, Maine –The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team (2-1) sailed past the Saint Joseph's Monks (0-3) on the road Wednesday afternoon by a 13-9 score, backstopped by 20 saves in goal by sophomore Ryan Kalberer (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.).


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Monks got out to a 2-0 lead just under five minutes into play with an initial goal from junior Tim Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.). Wentworth responded with two goals of their own, one each from junior Brayden Wilkins (Colchester, Vt.) and sophomore Brendan Voss (Sandyston, N.J.), to tie the score at two-all at the 5:03 mark. Goodfellow stuck once more on the man-advantage to give the hosts a 3-2 lead after one quarter of action.
  • Sophomore Erik Vogt (Warwick, N.Y.) notched the game-tying goal at the 10:34 mark of the second quarter before senior Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) re-gained the Monks' lead 1:34 later, bringing the score to 4-3. After another strike for the hosts, the Leopards tied the score at five apiece with rips from sophomore Jared Hiller (North Andover, Mass.) and freshman Tyler Longo (Kingston, N.Y.) before a goal by senior Jack Wishart (Reading, Mass.) gave the visitors a 6-5 edge with two minutes left in the second quarter. Another snipe from Vogt with one minute remaining extended the Leopards' lead to 7-5 by the end of the frame.
  • Wentworth continued their scoring splurge into the third quarter as junior Drew Bouley (Gloucester, Mass.) scored just 21 seconds into play to extend the lead to 8-5 before junior Logan Maklan (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored on the man-up to mark a 9-5 score. After a Monks' strike, Bouley notched his second of the game at the 6:19 mark, bringing the score to 10-6. Following a save by sophomore Ryan Kalberer (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), junior Dryden Fisher (Haverhill, Mass.) scored to extend the Black & Gold's lead to 11-6. Hiller scored once more at the 2:07 mark before Goodfellow narrowed the lead again with the man-advantage, bringing the score to 12-7 after three quarters of play.
  • After a tally for Michaud and Saint Joseph's with 6:04 remaining in the contest cut the deficit, Longo rattled his second goal of the day at the 4:35 mark, bringing the score to 13-8. The Monks tallied one more time before the end of the game, giving Wentworth a 13-9 victory on the road.
  • Freshman Samuel Silva (San Antonio, Texas) went 16-24 at the X, while Kalberer made 20 saves between the pipes. Vogt led the team with five points.


NOTEWORTHY:

  • Wentworth went 2-6 with with the man-advantage and owned a 40-32 advantage in ground balls.


SERIES NOTES:

  • The Leopards own the all-time series, 4-1, and have won each of the last two meetings.
