NASHUA, N.H. – Sophomore Nicholas Tavares (Danvers, Mass.) scored three goals and added an assists to help pace the Rivier University men's lacrosse team (4-1) to a 10-6 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology (2-5) in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Rivier got things going with a goal 59 seconds into the frame, off the stick of sophomore Chris Heitmiller (Nashua, N.H.). The Raiders scored three more times in the first quarter, as three different student-athletes tallied. Junior Colby Mercier (Boscawen, N.H.) had a goal and an assist in the frame.
  • Senior Jeffrey Potter (North Bennington, Vt.) scored a man-up goal 22 seconds into the second quarter before Wentworth junior Logan Maklan (Boca Raton, Fla.) put the Leopards on the board three and a half minutes later. Just 45 seconds later, the Leopards cut the lead to 5-2 on a senior Liam Carroll (Brookfield, Conn.) goal.
  • Rivier scored a pair of goals three and a half minutes apart to make it 7-2, however, the Black & Gold bounced back with two strikes off the sticks of junior Drew Bouley (Gloucester, Mass.) and junior Tyler Hoar (Hampton, N.H.), coming 1:25 apart. Raider junior Connor Eck (Franklin, Mass.) scored with 2:24 left, giving the hosts an 8-4 lead at the break.
  • A low-scoring third quarter saw each team score just one time. Rivier took a 9-4 lead with a goal from sophomore Nicholas Tavares (Danvers, Mass.) with 4:35 left. Maklan cut the lead to 9-5 with a man-up goal with 1:53 left to play in the quarter.
  • Maklan notched his third of the contest with 11:45 left in the fourth, making it a 9-6 game, off a rebound of his own saved shot. Wentworth had chances to pull closer, however, were unable to cut the deficit further. Tavares scored with 1:46 left to seal the win for Rivier.
  • Maklan finished with three goals while freshman Colin Ocampo (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) added two assists. Carroll scooped up six ground balls, while junior Connor Charron (North Andover, Mass.) was 6-of-13 at the X. Sophomore Ryan Kalberer (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) made nine saves.
