WENHAM, Mass. – Behind another six-goal outing by junior Logan Maklan (Boca Raton, Fla.), the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team (4-6, 1-1 CCC) edged Gordon (3-6, 0-2 CCC) by an 11-10 score, giving themselves their first Commonwealth Coast Conference win of the 2023 season Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth's scoring splurge started early, just 49 seconds into the game as Maklan struck to get the Leopards on the board. After Maklan scored again 15 seconds later, senior Liam Carroll (Brookfield, Conn.) scored at the 11:06 mark before a freshman Colin Ocampo (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) goal extended the Leopards' lead to 4-0 shortly thereafter. The two teams traded goals to end the quarter, with Gordon picking up two while the Leopards notched another from Maklan, to mark a 5-2 score after the first quarter.
  • Gordon struck twice to start the second quarter, just 55 seconds apart, before an answer from senior Jack Wishart (Reading, Mass.) stopped the run at the 10:20 mark and marked a 7-4 score. After another Gordon strike, Maklan and junior Drew Bouley (Gloucester, Mass.) scored 1:35 apart to extend Wentworth's lead to 9-5 heading into the second half.
  • The hosts rattled off the first three goals of the third quarter, two on the man-advantage, to dwindle the deficit to 9-8. However, another goal by Maklan at the 3:27 mark raised the lead to 10-8 by the conclusion of the third frame.
  • After a strike by junior Marco Fernandez (Fishkill, N.Y.) dwindled the deficit to 10-9 at the 13:07 mark of the fourth quarter, freshman Tyler Longo (Kingston, N.Y.) found the twine at the 11:30 mark to bring Wentworth's lead back to two at 11-9. The Fighting Scots pushed back by quarter's end, scoring a goal, but it wasn't enough, as the Leopards grabbed a narrow 11-10 victory.
  • Junior Connor Charron (Tewksbury, Mass.) went 11-20 at the faceoff circle while sophomore Ryan Kalberer (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) made 19 saves between the pipes.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Leopards dominated the ground game, owning a 47-28 edge in ground balls, while going a near-perfect 18-for-19 on clears.
