Mid-Game Push Puts Salve Regina over Men's Lacrosse in CCC Tournament Opener

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – In the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament's quarterfinal round, the Salve Regina Seahawks men's lacrosse team pushed past the Wentworth Institute of Technology with second and third quarter runs, never looking back and earning themselves a 17-9 victory in the tournament's opening round.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Leopards scored first at the 10:38 mark of the contest thanks to a rip on goal by junior Drew Bouley (Gloucester, Mass.) Salve Regina answered just six seconds later as junior Liam Cooney (Portsmouth, R.I) knotted the score at one apiece. After the Seahawks took their first lead of the day at the 9:39 mark with a goal, junior Tyler Hoar (Hampton, N.H.) scored at the 8:58 mark, marking a 2-2 tie. Wentworth rattled off two straight goals from junior Logan Maklan (Boca Raton, Fla.) and senior Liam Carroll (Brookfield, Conn.) shortly thereafter to take a 4-2 lead before the Seahawks tallied three times, twice from Cooney, to give themselves a 5-4 lead after the first frame.
  • Salve Regina opened the second quarter with three straight goals, including one from junior Max Beauchamp (Saunderstown, R.I.) to extend their lead to 8-4. A goal from freshman Tyler Longo (Kingston, N.Y.) at the 10:57 mark was followed by a tally from Carroll 33 seconds later to cut the Leopards' deficit to 8-6. Beauchamp began a three-goal run for the Seahawks with the man-advantage at the 8:46 mark to push the hosts' lead to 11-6 before goals from Maklan and Longo, the latter on the man-advantage, in a span of 18 seconds cut the deficit to 11-8. Beauchamp struck once more with 1:46 remaining in the second quarter to give Salve Regina a 12-8 advantage at the break.
  • Three goals for the Seahawks in a span of 4:10 extended their lead to 15-8 before Carroll scored his third of the game at the 9:26 mark. Another goal for Cooney pushed the score 16-9 before one final tally for the Seahawks in the fourth quarter gave the hosts a 17-9 quarterfinal win.
  • Freshman Samuel Silva (San Antonio, Texas) led the Leopards at the X, going 8-15 with three ground balls. In goal, sophomore Ryan Kalberer (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) made 14 saves.
