Men's Lacrosse Fends off Emerson in Season Opener
Leopards use a 6-2 run in the third quarter to take an 8-4 lead before holding on for an 8-7 win; Tom Gardner made 16 saves, including one on a potential game-tying shot with seven seconds left

BOSTON, Mass. – Using a 6-2 run in the third quarter, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team snapped a halftime tie and held on to open its season with an 8-7 win over Emerson.
Colin Ocampo and Drew Bouley each tallied a pair of goals for the Leopards, while Tyler Longo had a pair of assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Emerson got the only goal of the first quarter when Brady Fish scored 1:45 into the contest. The Lions had a 10-8 shot advantage in the frame, with five of those going on net. Tom Gardner made four saves in the opening 15 minutes.
- Jared Hiller potted a man-up marker with 13:05 left in the second quarter to even the score at 1-all. Nearly two and a half minutes later, the Leopards took a 2-1 lead on a goal from Dryden Fisher. Wentworth held the lead for most of the remainder of the quarter, however, a goal from Fish evened the contest at 2-all with 1:25 left.
- Erik Vogt and Bouley scored 2:15 apart early in the third quarter to give the Black & Gold a 4-2 lead. After Emerson tied the game with 8:28 left, Bouley and Ocampo scored at 8:09 and 5:47, respectively, to make it 6-3. Emerson cut the lead to 6-4 with 4:06 left, however, Boden Landers and Ocampo gave Wentworth an 8-4 lead through three quarters.
- Scoring a pair of goals in a 28-second span, the Lions pulled back within a pair (8-6) with 8:24 left. The hosts pulled within one on Jack Burns' third goal of the game coming with 2:43 left. Emerson won the ensuing faceoff and Burns got a shot off that was saved by Gardner with 1:57 left. The Leopards turned the ball over with 44 seconds left, giving the Lions a chance to tie the game. With seven seconds left, Benson Offit had a chance to second the game into overtime, however, Gardner came up with the game-saving stop to preserve the win.
- Gardner made 16 saves and scooped up nine ground balls. Connor Charron was 10-of-19 at the X. The Leopards were 22-of-28 on clearing attempts, while holding advantages in shots (44-36) and ground balls (30-25).
SERIES NOTES:
- Tonight was the 10th all-time meeting between the two teams.
