BOSTON, Mass. – A 14-2 run in the second half after being down 5-4 at the halfway mark helped the Skidmore Thoroughbreds men's lacrosse team (1-0) to a season-opening win over Wentworth Institute of Technology (1-1) in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Thoroughbreds jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the 10:28 mark of the first quarter on tallies by Caleb Lawson and Briann Gonsalves. Late in the first, the Leopards cut the deficit to 2-1 on a strike by Tyler Longo at the 2:21 mark before Longo scored again just under a minute later, resulting in a 2-2 draw.
- Gonsalves opened the scoring for Skidmore in the second quarter before the Black & Gold knotted the score again just 1:21 later, making a 3-3 tie. Ryan Connolly gave the Thoroughbreds a 4-3 edge by the 8:19 mark before Drew Bouley notched a tally and started a 2-0 run for the Leopards to give themselves a 5-4 edge at the half.
- Skidmore knotted the score at 5-all just 51 seconds into the third frame before rattling off a 7-1 run over the next 11:30 of play, claiming themselves a 12-6 lead by the end of the quarter.
- Six different goal-scorers factored into a 6-1 run for Skidmore in the fourth frame, pushing their lead to 18-7 with just 30 ticks remaining. Gonsalves led the scoring on both sides with four goals followed by Lawson with three. Bouley led the Black & Gold with a goal and two assists.
- Tom Gardner made 17 saves in goal and scooped up five ground balls. Connor Charron led the efforts at X, going 9-for-27 with seven ground balls.
SERIES NOTES:
- Today marked the first all-time meeting between the two teams.
