Coast Guard Fends Off Men's Lacrosse
Bears prevail in 13-11 battle with Leopards; Gabe Cobham leads offensively with five goals and two assists

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Three student-athletes of the United States Coast Guard Academy men's lacrosse team (2-1) tallied three or more goals as the Bears fended off Wentworth Institute of Technology (3-2) by a 13-11 score in non-conference play Thursday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth took a 2-0 lead by the 4:04 mark of the opening frame with tallies by Tyler Longo and Dryden Fisher. However, the Bears dwindled the lead to one with a goal just 33 seconds after Longo's finish.
- Ryan Hunter and Ezekiel Christian each scored early in the second quarter to give Coast Guard a 3-2 edge by the 12:53 mark before a strike by Gabe Cobham just 21 seconds later knotted the score at three aside.
- From there, the Bears rattled off three straight goals in quick fashion, including two from Eric Key, to take a 6-3 lead by the 11:15 mark. Cobham and Bouley would strike to cut Wentworth's deficit to 6-5 before another Bears' tally gave the hosts a 7-5 lead at the half.
- The Leopards cut the deficit to 7-6 just 1:02 into the third quarter before another three straight tallies from the Bears marked a 10-6 game by the 7:17 mark. The Leopards answered with three straight of their own, including goals from Bouley and Cobham, to dwindle the deficit to 10-9 before a Christian strike with 1:17 left gave Coast Guard an 11-9 lead.
- The two teams traded scores in the fourth frame, with Cobham notching both Wentworth goals (5:27, 1:21) in the stanza. However, the Bears would hold on for a 13-11 win backed by 17 saves from Brett Tobasky.
- Tom Gardner made 13 saves between the pipes for the Black & Gold while Cobham led on offense with five goals and two assists. At the X, Connor Charron went 6-for-19 on draws and notched four ground balls. Wentworth outshot Coast Guard 45-37 and went 18-for-19 on clears.
SERIES NOTES:
- Tonight marked the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
