CLEARWATER, Fla. – A complete team effort, featuring goals from eight different student-athletes, guided the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team (4-2) to a dominant 16-7 win over non-conference foe Emmanuel (0-3) Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Saints took a 2-1 edge with 9:45 left in the first quarter before Wentworth rattled off four straight goals, featuring two from Drew Bouley and a cap with the man-advantage, in a span of 6:32 to take a 5-2 lead by the end of the first frame.
- After Cooper Mehlhorn cut Emmanuel's deficit to 5-3 early in the second quarter, the Leopards sprouted a 4-1 run, featuring two tallies from Kobi Buffa, to the 2:22 mark of the frame to give the Black & Gold a 9-4 advantage.
- The Leopards rocketed off another run in the third quarter, this time at 6-1, to extend their lead to 15-5. Jared Hiller notched two goals in the run while Erik Vogt collected his second tally of the game.
- Buffa scored early in the fourth frame to extend Wentworth's lead to 16-5 before two Saints' tallies cut the deficit to 16-7 before the final horn blew. Vogt led the offensive efforts with three goals and two assists while Bouley and Gabe Cobham each had identical offensive showings (2 goals, 2 assists).
- In goal, Tom Gardner made 13 saves on 18 shots in three quarters of play. A.J. Smith and Riley Abbott combined for three saves in the relief effort while Connor Charron dominated the X, going 17-for-21 with 11 ground balls.
SERIES NOTES:
- Wentworth leads the all-time series, 7-2.
