CLEARWATER, Fla. – A defensive showing featuring a 42-24 advantage in ground balls helped the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team (5-2) to a 12-2 triumph over the Dubuque Spartans (1-3) Thursday afternoon in each teams' finale of their respective Florida swings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Leopards scored four unanswered goals in the first quarter, including three in a span of 2:22, to take a 4-0 lead by the 7:12 mark. Jared Hiller, Tyler Longo, Erik Vogt, and Richard Roy all found the scoresheet in the frame.
- Kobi Buffa pushed the Black & Gold's lead to 5-0 with 6:21 left in the second quarter before, after a Spartans' tally, Wentworth added three goals, including another two from Longo, to push their advantage to 8-1 with just two seconds left before the break.
- Two goals from Gabe Cobham were all the scoring in the third quarter, stretching the Leopards' lead to 10-1, before a 2-1 edge in goals in the fourth quarter helped the Leopards down the Spartans, 12-2.
- Longo paced the offense with three goals and four assists. In goal, Tom Gardner made seven saves on eight shots and scooped up five ground balls to earn the win before Riley Abbott made a stop in relief. At the X, Connor Charron went 11-for-15 with six ground balls.
