WNE Fends Off Men’s Lacrosse
Behind 9-2 at the half, the Leopards come back to cut the deficit to one but ultimately fall 15-11; Drew Bouley tallies four points (three goals, one assist)
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Despite overcoming a 9-2 halftime deficit, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team's comeback bid against Western New England fell short with the Leopards ultimately falling by a 15-11 score in Conference of New England action Wednesday night.
With the win, the Golden Bears inch closer back to .500 at 6-7 overall (3-1 CNE). The Black & Gold, who suffer their first setback since February 27, slip to 10-3 overall (3-1 CNE).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Leopards grabbed a 1-0 edge just 1:33 into the night as Gabe Cobham struck twine. Jacob Roy tallied for the Golden Bears just nine seconds later before Erik Vogt scored to put Wentworth ahead 2-1 at the 9:32 mark. Jack Houlden scored twice while Roy added another to rally WNE to a 4-2 lead after the opening frame.
- The Golden Bears rattled off five straight goals from five different goal-scorers in the second quarter, giving themselves a 9-2 lead at the break.
- The Black & Gold erased much of the deficit in the third quarter, scoring seven straight goals in a span of 9:19 to mark a 10-9 score by the 2:38 mark. Vogt scored three goals in the run while Brendan Kroll added a pair.
- Griffin LaRochelle kickstarted two straight goals for WNE early in the fourth, padding their lead at 12-9, before Bouley cut the deficit to 12-10 at the 11:42 mark. The Golden Bears answered with three straight of their own before Bouley struck once more with just 54 ticks on the clock.
- In goal, Tom Gardner made 11 saves and collected three ground balls. At the X, Connor Charron went 10-for-30 with six ground balls. On the back end, Trevor Guilmette had a game-high three caused turnovers.
NOTEWORTHY:
- Charron sits nine ground balls away from being the program's all-time leader.
SERIES NOTES:
- Tonight marked the 18th all-time meeting between the two teams.
