Rowing Kicks Off Season at Textile River Regatta
Men's novice four boat places first and the the men's novice eight boat places second to highlight a successful season-opening regatta
LOWELL, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology rowing team kicked off its 2016-17 campaign at the Textile River Regatta on Sunday and came home with a first and a second-place finish among the five boats entered on the day.
Wentworth's men's novice four boat, led by freshman coxswain Sara Anderson (Manchester, N.H.) and freshmen Tyler Brinson (Lowell, Mass.), Dylan Ryan (Belmont, Mass.), Sepehr Khansalar (Cambridge, Mass.), and Bohdan Ruehle (Kinnelon, N.J.) placed first in its three-boat field with a time of 23:11.243.
In the men's novice eight race, the Leopards posted a second-place finish in an eight-boat field, crossing the line in a time of 22:49.377. WPI won the race with a time of 21:31.911. Sophomore coxswain Kristian Hosker (Nahant, Mass.), junior Brian Downey (Merrick, N.Y.), freshman Liam Jacques (Medford, Mass.), freshman Joshua Tremblay (Lowell, Mass.), junior Jacob L'Heureux (Sanford, Maine), freshman James Bednar (Kansas City, Mo.), sophomore Travis Worrick (Plymouth, Mass.), sophomore Orion Hansen (Tampa, Fla.), and freshman Cameron Labrecque (Bedford, N.H.) competed in that boat.
The Leopards raced three boats in the men's open four race, posting a seventh, 10th, and 13th-place finish among the 15 boats in the race.
Freshman coxswain Jocelyn Frechette (Dracut, Mass.), sophomore Karlis Kaza (Wayland, Mass.), junior Alec Boyle (Shirley, Mass.), junior Logan O'Donnell (Killingworth, Conn.), and junior Matt West (Hingham, Mass.) placed seventh with a time of 23:02.795.
Freshman coxswain Emily Seslar (Plymouth, Mass.), junior Padraic O'Sullivan (Upton, Mass.), junior Dylan McGuinness (Methuen, Mass.), and sophomore TJ Dion were 10th with a time of 23:39.155.
Sophomore coxswain Leslie Vongphakdy (Riverside, R.I.), Downey, Hansen, sophomore Ethan Butterworth (Cohasset, Mass.), and junior Chase Manning (Franklin, Mass.) finished 13th after crossing the line in a time of 26:37.533.
Wentworth will race at the Head of the Housatonic Regatta on Saturday.
