Rowing Enjoys Historic Day at New England Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. – For the first time in the five-year, varsity history of the Wentworth Institute of Technology rowing program, the Leopards took home medals in all three races they were entered in at the New England Rowing Championships. Both the Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four boats placed second in their respective races, while the Third Varsity Four boat placed third.

The day began with the Third Varsity Four bat competing in a time trial. Sophomore coxswain Emily Seslar (Plymouth, Mass.) along with freshman Zachary Gaudet (Dracut, Mass.), senior Dylan McGuinness (Methuen, Mass.), senior Kyle Rowe (Eliot, Maine), and freshman Erik Fuhrmann (Charlton, Mass.) placed third out of 11 boats with a time of 5:46.657. Advancing to the grand final in the afternoon, Wentworth finished third among six boats, finishing with a time of 7:02.328, which was behind the University of Rhode Island (6:52.000) and Bowdoin's "A" entry (6:54.040).

Sophomore coxswain Sara Anderson (Manchester, N.H.) led the Second Varsity Four boat which consisted of senior Padraic O'Sullivan (Upton, Mass.), senior Logan O'Donnell (Killingworth, Conn.), sophomore James Bednar (Kansas City, Mo.), and freshman Ben Coleman (Avon, Conn.). The Leopards placed second among nine boats in its time trial with a time of 5:45.124, and, advancing to the afternoon's grand final, was edged by Bowdoin as Wentworth finished with a time of 6:57.735, which was just over a second and a quarter slower than the Polar Bears' 6:56.478.

The Varsity Four boat wrapped up the successful day for the Black & Gold, competing in the grand final during the afternoon session. Freshman coxswain John Inman (North Grafton, Mass.) along with sophomore Tyler Brinson (Lowell, Mass.), sophomore John Parker (Fairport, N.Y.), senior Alec Boyle (Shirley, Mass.), and senior Jacob L'Heureux (Saco, Maine) placed second among seven boats with a time of 6:44.840. Wentworth's second-place finish was behind Bowdoin (6:40.460).

Wentworth wraps up its 2017-2018 campaign at the Dad Vail Regatta next weekend.
