Men's Soccer Sees Season Come to an End With Loss at UNE

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Callum Heaslewood (London, England) scored with 2:43 remaining in regulation to cap off three unanswered goals as the University of New England men's soccer team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 4-3, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Tuesday night.

With the win the Nor'Easters improve to 6-11-0 overall and 3-5-0 in CCC play while the Leopards see their season end with a 6-11-1 (2-6-0) record. UNE's win snapped a 12-game series winless streak (0-8-4), as the hosts picked up their first series win since September 21, 2005.

In the fourth minute of the contest, senior Noah Martins nearly put the Black & Gold ahead when his shot was headed towards the UNE goal, however, was cleared out by a back line player. The game remained scoreless until junior Griffin Price (Allendale, N.J.) made a move past a defender at put home a shot to the left side at 13:55.

Wentworth's lead did not last long, however, as junior Colin Madigan (Canton, Conn.) evened the score just 16 seconds later. Madigan took a shot from 20 yards out which hit the right post and went across the line. At 17:45, Price gave the Leopards a 2-1 lead when he scored off a free kick from the top of the box and Martins gave the visitors a 3-2 lead when he took a long feed from freshman Alex Moore (Salem, Conn.) and scored his seventh marker of the season.

The Nor'Easters scored twice in a span of 3:01 to tie the game. At 29:33, Heaslewood netted his first of the game off a feed from junior Cam Twombly (Saco, Maine) before Twombly found the back of the net at 32:34 off a corner kick from senior Lee Esposito (Niskayuna, N.Y.).

While both teams had seven shot attempts in the second half, Wentworth has a 2-1 edge on shots on goal. UNE's shot on goal came when Heaslewood took a pass from Twombly and gave the hosts a 4-3 lead. Wentworth had one chance to tie the game in the 89th minute, however, Martins' bid went wide.

Senior Nathan Delesdernier (Niantic, Conn.) made three saves in the win. Senior Matthew Sekarek (Winthrop, Maine) did not make a save in the second half. Junior Philip Chomicki (Dorchester, Mass.) made a pair of saves in the first half. UNE had a 16-12 shot advantage and a 3-1 edge on corner kicks.
