WORCESTER, Mass. - Fabio Bastida-Andree and Mike Montabana each scored a pair of goals as the WPI men's soccer team (6-2-1) defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology (4-3-2), 6-0, in non-conference action Tuesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth had a pair of chances early as Michael Liquori put a shot on net in the third minute of play and Zachary Redondo's header off a free kick attempt went just wide of the mark nearly four minutes later.
- At the 15:09 mark, WPI struck first when Brady Burch sent a pass from the corner across the box to Bastida-Andree, who beat Leopard keeper Adrian Sanchez. The Engineers added to their lead at the 24:58 mark when Montabana slid a pass to Aaron Vaz, who fired a shot across the goal.
- Sanchez came up with saves off headers from corner kick services in the 37th and 39th minutes to keep it a two-goal game. However, in the 44th minute, a defensive miscue by the Black & Gold resulted in an own goal, putting the hosts ahead, 3-0 at the break.
- At 59:21, Vaz set up Bastida-Andree for his second marker of the contest.
- Wentworth had a quality scoring chance in the 64th minute when Dylan Michaud took a shot that was saved by Savio Ketnouvong and resulted in a corner kick. However, the Leopards were unable to generate a scoring chance off the set piece.
- Montabana scored twice in a span of seven and a half minutes to round out the scoring.
- Sanchez turned back a career-high 10 shots as WPI had advantages in shots (23-6) and corner kicks (9-3).
