NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Joey Paiva scored a pair of goals, including the game winner in the 69th minute as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team (2=6=3) defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology (6-5-2) in non-conference action Tuesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UMass Dartmouth had a pair of shots early, including a header in front that was saved by Noah Lawless. On the Corsairs' third shot attempt of the game, coming at 4:54, Mario Rodriguez sent a pass to Joey Paiva whose shot to the lower right beat Lawless.
- At the 5:49 mark, Wentworth nearly tied the game, however, Michael Liquori's attempt hit the crossbar. In the 12th minute, Dylan Michaud had an attempt just inside the box that was saved by Ethan Donahue.
- Paiva nearly put the hosts on top, 2-0, in the 31st minute, however, Lawless came up with a diving stop in front to thwart the scoring chance. Just under a minute later, UMass Dartmouth had a chance on an open net. Angel Rojas came up and cleared the ball out right before it found the back of the net.
- Late in the first half, Sam Wong had a shot saved by Donahue, keeping it 1-0 at the break.
- At the 51:41 mark, Wentworth evened the score. A through ball from Luis Valiente found its way to Michaud, who took a shot that was saved by Donahue. Michaud collected his own rebound and scored the unassisted tally.
- Rodriguez put a shot to the upper right in the 67th minute but Lawless made a leaping save, punching the ball out of bounds. On the ensuing corner kick, Wentworth's defense was able to clear the ball away before a scoring chance occurred.
- With 21:05 left, a foul was called on the Black & Gold, which resulted in a penalty kick. Paiva stepped to the spot and put home the attempt, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead.
- Vinny Dentrone had a chance to tie the game with 1:17 left, however, his shot went just to the right of the right post.
- Lawless finished with four saves while Donahue stopped three shots. UMass Dartmouth had a 15-12 shot advantage and a 7-2 edge on corner kicks.
