BOSTON, Mass. – Cortez Cardone's goal with 7:23 remaining snapped a 1-all tie and lifted the Gordon College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Conference of New England play Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Fighting Scots improve to 6-4-5 overall and 2-1-3 in CNE play while the Leopards fall to 6-8-2 (2-4-0).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth had its first scoring chance of the day when a shot from Luis Valiente was saved by Carson Flake in the seventh minute. Vinny Dentrone connected on a shot in front in the 20th minute but Flake came up with the save.
- The Leopards nearly went ahead in the 31st minute as Christopher Jimenez took a shot the hit towards the top of the right post. The ball caromed down just outside of the goal line and was cleared away by Gordon.
- At the 71:27 mark, the Fighting Scots got on the board. Gilbert Daru carried the ball in along the left side and sent a low pass towards the box. Dominic Alberto tapped the ball to Benny Simpson who put the shot inside the right post.
- Just over two minutes later Jimenez evened the game at a goal apiece, as a misclear from the Fighting Scot defense found his foot. He buried a shot to the upper center of the goal at 73:44.
- Cardone's go-ahead goal came off a throw-in that the Wentworth defense couldn't clear. He gained possession off the misclear and found the back of the net.
- Flake made three saves for Gordon while Noah Lawless turned aside five shots for the Leopards. Wentworth had a 15-13 shot advantage and a 5-4 corner kick advantage.
