Pierce Helps Outdoor Track & Field to Third Place Finish at CCC Championships

WENHAM, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology outdoor track team posted a third-place finish at the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championships, held at Gordon College. The Leopards amassed 103 points to finish behind Roger Williams (175) and the host Fighting Scots (122).

Field events carried the Black & Gold as the Leopards scored 78 points in throws and jumps combined, thanks to a pair of first-place finishes from senior Jared Pierce (Biddeford, Maine) in the shot put and discus and first-place finishes from sophomore Nate Muller (Concord, N.H.) and junior Tyler Klockars (Phillipston, Mass.) in the pole vault and javelin, respectively.

In the 100M, sophomore Scott Stehlik (Northport, N.Y.) placed second (eight points) with a time of 11.38, while sophomore Ryan Abbotoni (Windham, Maine) was sixth (one point) with a time of 11.50. Wentworth picked up a point in the 400M as senior Matt Murphy (Foxborough, Mass.) was sixth with a time of 52.62. Senior Christian Army (Pembroke, N.H.) also picked up a first-place finish (10 points) in the 110M hurdles, clocking a time of 16.41.

The 3000M Steeplechase saw senior Brendan Jeanjaquet (Weymouth, Mass.) finish sixth (one point) with a program-best time of 10:34.80. Wentworth's 4X400M Relay team of Murphy, senior Jack Chausse (Newport, R.I.), Abbotoni, and Stehlik picked up four points with a fourth-place finish, setting a program record with a time of 3:38.01.

In the high jump, Wentworth collected 11 points, paced by junior Dre Colas' (Cambridge, Mass.) 1.75M jump, which was good for second place (eight points). Junior Eli Sleasman (Albany, N.Y.) and freshman Fabrice Fouron (Easton, Mass.) were fifth and sixth, each clearing 1.70M (two and one point, respectively).

Muller gave Wentworth 10 points in the pole vault with a mark of 4.15M, while he also collected a point for a sixth-place finish in the long jump (5.83M). Fouron finished fifth in the long jump (two points, with a jump of 6.20M.

Fouron led the Leopards with eight of 11 points in the triple jump as he was second with a jump of 12.97M. Sleasman (fifth place, two points) and Colas (sixth place, one point) jumped 11.96M and 11.82M, respectively.

Pierce picked up 28 points in the three events he competed in. His first place (10 points) throw of 15.85M broke his own program record, as did his second place (eight points) throw of 45.44M in the hammer. His winning discus throw (10 points) was 46.90M.

Klockars broke his own record in the javelin with his first place (10 points) throw of 54.77M. Senior Ed Ardolino (Saugus, Mass.) scored four points with a fourth place throw of 47.68M.

Student-athletes who placed first, second, and third will be named all-conference when the league releases its all-conference teams and major award winners on May 11.

On the women's side, junior Dionne Ang (Victoria, Australia) matched her 100M record of 13.64. Senior Colleen Sullivan (Bridgewater, Mass.) broke her own record in the 800M, clocking a time of 2:29.96. Freshman Laci Santos (Medway, Mass.) set a program mark in the javelin with a throw of 28.92M, while senior Allison Goodreau (Cumberland, R.I.) established a program record in the shot put (8.89M).

Selected student-athletes who qualified will compete at the Division III New England Championships next weekend at Springfield College.
