Bio
Emily Gustavson begins her third season as Wentworth’s Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Teams in 2024-2025.
Gustavson’s second year at the helm in 2023-24 was highlighted by the debut of Wentworth’s 18th and 19th varsity sports, women’s indoor and outdoor track & Field. In the fall’s men’s cross country season, she coached a repeat All-CCC honoree in sophomore Ryan Ballard. On the men’s side, the Leopards’ outdoor track and field team had 15 All-Conference honorees, leading Wentworth to a second-place finish in the conference, while sophomore Fabrice Fouron (indoor and outdoor) and senior Eli Sleasman (indoor) earned All-Region recognition.
Gustavson’s tenure began with an all-conference honoree in men’s cross country, freshman Ryan Ballard, in 2022. In her start with the indoor track and field team, a splash of event records were broken all season long while she coached senior Jared Pierce to an All-American accolade, the second in program history, in the shotput. In the outdoor season, Pierce guided the Leopards with another All-American honor in the shotput, the first in program history in an outdoor season. Pierce, who was also named CCC Field Athlete of the Year, joined six others with all-conference honors in 2023.
For three years prior to her arrival at Wentworth (2020-22), Gustavson served as an assistant coach at her alma mater as an assistant coach for the Lyons’ men’s and women’s track & field programs where she wrote and executed training plans for jumpers (long, triple, high) and pole vaulters.
In addition to her work with the jumpers, she was also responsible for the following areas within the program: recruiting strategies and outreach, participating in the team's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion group, coordinating the program's social media efforts, recruiting and travel, serving as the site manager for high school meets at Wheaton's indoor track facility, and writing and executing lifting plans for the program and other teams at the college.
Under her tutelage, the Lyons produced two NCAA Qualifiers and 12 All-Region selections.
A 2017 graduate of Wheaton with a Bachelor’s degree in Film and New Media Studies, Gustavson was a four-year member of the Wheaton women's track and field program. She was a two-time All-American in the 200-meter dash for the Lyons, an NCAA Qualifier in the 200m, 400m, and 4x100m relay events, an 11-time New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference All-Conference selection, the 2017 NEWMAC Track Athlete of the Year, the 2017 Debi Field Outstanding Female Athlete Award recipient (Wheaton's Top Female Athlete), and a two-time captain.
Upon graduation, Gustavson served as an assistant coach for Wheaton's men's and women's cross country programs.
Gustavson earned her Master of Science in Exercise and Sport Studies at Smith College while serving as a graduate assistant coach for the Pioneers' track and field program (2018-2020). At Smith, Gustavson wrote and executed training plans for the speed/power event groups, coached the sprinters, relays, and high jumpers, and aided in the program's recruiting efforts.
Gustavson is a USATF Level 1 certified coach and holds certifications from the USTFCCCA in sprints, hurdles, relays, strength and conditioning, and jumps.
