PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University men's volleyball team lost to Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-0 in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Thursday night. Wentworth posted a 30-23 win in game one, a 30-21 win in game two and wrapped up the sweep with a 30-24 victory in the third game.

 

Johnson & Wales was led by sophomore Petar Yanikiev (Varna, Bulguria) with eight kills and 11 digs. Junior Eric Minnich (Concord, Calif.) recorded eight kills and seven digs while sophomore Tim Haley (West Warwick, R.I.) added eight kills, two digs and two blocks in the setback for the Wildcats.

 

Junior Derek Portugal (Barrington, R.I,) paced Wentworth with a match-high 14 kills while adding nine digs and five service aces. Junior Lowell Jesmer had 11 kills, four blocks and two digs while freshman Tyler Moriarty (Wilbraham, Mass.) notched 27 set assists and 11 digs for a double-double on the victory for the Leopards.

 

With the loss Johnson & Wales wraps up the 2010 campaign with an 8-20 mark while Wentworth improves to 16-9.  The 16 wins posted by the Leopards are the second-most in program history, behind the 2000 squad's 19 (19-6).
