Men's Volleyball Splits in First Day at SUNYIT Invitational

UTICA, N.Y. – Wentworth's men's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the 2010 SUNYIT Wildcat Invitational.  The Leopards fell to D'Youville, 3-1, before defeating the host Wildcats by a 3-1 score.

 

In the first game against D'Youville, the Leopards and the Spartans battled back and forth before D'Youville took a 30-24 win.  Wentworth clawed back in the second game to even the match at 1-all with a 30-28 win before falling by that same score in the third game.  Needing a win in the fourth game to extend the match, the Leopards were defeated, 30-20.

 

Junior Lowell Jesmer (Rochester, N.Y.) had 13 kills and five blocks, while classmate Dan Mulvey (Halifax, Mass.) hit .550 coming on 12 kills and adding three blocks.  Senior Tom Ceuverls (Weymouth, Mass.) had 10 kills, six digs, and four blocks.

 

The Leopards would take a 30-23 win over SUNYIT in the first game between the two before the Wildcats evened the match with a 34-32 win in the second game.  Wentworth would take the next two games by 30-27 and 30-25 scores to win, 3-1.

 

As a team Wentworth hit .549 and was led by 18 kills and four blocks from senior Derek Portugal (Barrington, R.I.), while Ceurvels (13 kills) and Jesmer (12 kills) each contributed to the offense.  Jesmer also had five blocks and a pair of aces.  Freshman Tyler Moriarty (Wilbraham, Mass.), who had 50 assists against D'Youville, had 52 against SUNYIT.
