Wentworth Closes Out Play at SUNYIT Wildcat Invitational
Leopards drop tough, 3-2 decision to Lancaster Bible before taking 3-1 decision from SUNYIT
UTICA, N.Y. – The Leopard men's volleyball team posted its second consecutive 1-1 day to finish play at the 2010 SUNYIT Wildcat Invitational with a 2-2 record. Wentworth was defeated by Lancaster Bible, 3-2, in the first match of the day before defeating SUNYIT for the second time in as many days, 3-1.
Wentworth took the first game against Lancaster Bible, 30-20, before dropping the second game by a 30-26 score. Lancaster Bible took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 30-27 win in game number three, before the Leopards forced a deciding game with a 30-17 win in the fourth game. A back-and-forth battle ensued in the match's final game before Lancaster Bible won, 15-13.
Junior Lowell Jesmer (Rochester, N.Y.) hit .621, including 21 kills to go along with five blocks. Classmate Dan Mulvey (Halifax, Mass.) had 11 kills and two aces, while junior Derek Portugal (Barrington, R.I.) had 18 kills, three blocks, and two aces.
The Leopards evened their tournament record at 2-2 by defeating the host Wildcats in their final match of the tournament. The Leopards took the first game by a 30-28 score before Wentworth won the next three games (30-22, 30-27, 30-24). Jesmer had 11 kills and three blocks, Portugal had 10 kills, 11 digs, five aces, and two blocks, while freshman Tyler Moriarty (Wilbraham, Mass.) had 36 assists after recording 56 against Lancaster Bible.
