Leopards Fall Twice at Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. – The Wentworth men's volleyball team suffered a pair of setbacks at the 2011 Rivier College Invitational as the Leopards fell to the host Raiders, 3-0, before closing out tournament play with a 3-0 loss to Lasell.

Against Rivier, ranked fifth in the latest AVCA Division III Men's Volleyball Poll, the Leopards fell behind early in the opening game before falling by a 25-16 score.  The hosts hit a crisp .529 in the second game, while holding the Leopards to a negative hitting percentage, en route to a 25-13 win.  Rivier closed out the match with a 25-20 win in the third game.

Freshman Mike Buonincontra (Shelton, Conn.) and senior Derek Portugal (Barrington, R.I.) each had six kills, with Buonincontra adding a pair of aces.  Freshman Ross Burdett (Needham, Mass.) had five kills, while sophomore Tyler Moriarty (Wilbraham, Mass.) had 20 assists in the match.

Against Lasell the Leopards dropped a close first game, falling 25-23, before falling in the next two games by 25-21 and 25-19.  Senior Lowell Jesmer (Rochester, N.Y.), who contributed three blocks in the Rivier match, had 10 kills and one block, with Burdett adding eight kills.  Senior Dan Mulvey (Halifax, Mass.) and Portugal had seven and five kills, respectively.  Portugal also added three blocks.  Moriarty had 22 assists and a team-high nine digs.

Wentworth stands at 1-3 and hosts Regis in an NECVA New England match on Tuesday.
