Wentworth Goes 2-1 at Lancaster Bible Quad

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Wentworth men's volleyball team went an impressive 2-1 at the Lancaster Bible Quad Tournament on Saturday to run its record to 8-5 on the year.  The Leopards defeated Lancaster Bible, 3-0, to open the day before seeing their six-match win streak come to a close with a 3-2 loss to Stevenson.  Wentworth closed the day with a 3-1 win over Thiel.

In the first match of the day, Wentworth hit a blistering .480 in the first game, en route to a 25-18 win.  The host Chargers played the Leopards more evenly in the second game, but the Leopards prevailed, 25-20, and despite only hitting .091 in the third game, Wentworth completed the sweep with a 25-18 win.

Senior Derek Portugal (Barrington, R.I.) recorded 13 digs for the Leopards, while freshman Ross Burdett (Needham, Mass.) chipped in with 11 kills and senior Dan Mulvey (Halifax, Mass.) added eight.  Sophomore Tyler Moriarty (Wilbraham, Mass.) had 27 kills.

Wentworth's second game of the day was a back-and-forth affair against Stevenson.  The Leopards hit .286 as a team in the first game and took a 25-17 win.  In the second game, there were 13 ties and five lead changes with the Mustangs taking a 25-23 win to even the match.  Wentworth hit a match-best .323 in the third game and went ahead 2-1 with a 25-17 win.  The fourth game was a mirror image of the second game, with the Mustangs forcing a fifth and deciding game with a 25-23 win.

In the fifth game, the Leopards had match point and were serving with a 14-10 lead.  However, the Mustangs scored five straight points to earn match point of their own at 15-14.  A Burdett kill evened the score at 15, and after Stevenson went ahead 16-15, Burdett recorded another kill to tie the score for the 35th time in the match.  A Mustang kill and a Wentworth error gave Stevenson a 3-2 victory with an 18-16 win.

Burdett recorded 25 kills and 11 digs and hit .264 for the match, with Portugal adding 19 kills, three aces, three blocks, and 15 digs.  Senior Marc Larue (Lincoln, R.I.) had a match-high 19 digs, while Moriarty had 51 assists.

Wentworth hit above .250 in all four games against Thiel, including a match-best .296 in the first game when the Leopards took a 1-0 lead with a 25-21 win.  The Leopards held the Tomcats to .062 as a team in the second game, taking a 25-18 win.  Thiel made it a 2-1 match after hitting .500 in the third game – making just one attack error – and winning, 25-17.  The Leopards closed out the match with a 25-21 win in the fourth game.

Burdett hit .393 with 13 kills on 28 swings and added eight digs.  Portugal chipped in with 11 kills, two aces, two digs, and two blocks, while senior Lowell Jesmer (Rochester, N.Y.) had nine kills and three blocks.  Larue added 13 digs with Moriarty recording 40 assists, giving him 118 in the three matches.  Moriarty moved into third place on the Leopards' career assist list as he now has 1,270.

Wentworth hosts Emerson on Tuesday night.
