Men's Volleyball Snaps Losing Streak

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomores Ross Burdett (Needham, Mass.) and Mike Buonincontra (Shelton, Conn.) recorded 12 and seven kills, respectively, and combined to hit .515 to help the Wentworth men's volleyball team snap a three-match losing streak with a 3-0 win over Mount Ida in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Thursday night.

The Leopards received three kills apiece from freshmen Rami Akouri (Fall River, Mass.) and Israel Shaw (New Ipswich, N.H.) in the opening game and would take a 1-0 lead with a 25-16 win. The momentum carried over into the second game where Wentworth won by a 25-10 score, thanks in part to four kills from Burdett and three from Buonincontra.

Burdett had six of Wentworth's 13 kills in the third game to help the Black & Gold hit .632 and close out the match with a 25-18 win.

Akouri finished with five kills and tied Buonincontra for the team lead with seven digs. Shaw added five blocks, while Buonincontra was solid from the serving line with four aces. Junior Tyler Moriarty (Wilbraham, Mass.) had 30 assists in the win.

The Mustangs received 12 kills from junior Spencer Hastings (Orlando, Fla.), while junior Ricky Oliveira (New Bedford, Mass.) and sophomore Nick Schibi (Torrington, Conn.) had seven and five kills, respectively. Senior McCoy Arnoux (Brockton, Mass.) had two blocks for Mount Ida.

With the win Wentworth improves to 4-3 overall and notches its first-ever GNAC win (1-2). The Leopards travel to Newbury on Saturday for a tri-match against the Nighthawks and Southern Vermont. Mount Ida is idle until February 15 when they host the Leopards in the second of the two meetings between the two schools.
