MARCY, N.Y. – After splitting a pair of matches on Friday night at the 2016 SUNY Poly Invitational, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team took a win and a loss on the second and final day of the tournament as the Leopards swept Bard, 3-0, before dropping a 3-1 decision to fourth-ranked Nazareth.
WENTWORTH 3, BARD 0
Wentworth flying out of the gate, taking a 25-11 victory in the first set and never looking back. In the opening set the Leopards hit .300, which increased to .316 in the second set, which was a 25-12 win. The sweep was completed with a 25-17 win in the third set. In both the second and third sets the Black & Gold forced Bard to hit negatively, including -.217 in the second set.
A balanced offense led the Leopards in their second straight win. Junior Mike Hansen (Rochester, N.Y.) had seven kills on 11 swings for a .636 attack percentage and also recorded three blocks. Sophomore Sean Mullen (Longwood, Fla.) had six kills, six aces, and a pair of blocks. Sophomore Kevin McPeek (Bethlehem, Pa.) had 20 assists, two aces, and seven digs.
No. 4 NAZARETH 3, WENTWORTH 1
Facing its first nationally ranked foe of the season, the Leopards dropped the opening set 25-21 to fourth-ranked Nazareth and found itself trailing 2-0 with a 25-23 loss in the second set, despite hitting .364 in the set. Wentworth picked up a win in the third set to keep the match alive, defeating the Golden Flyers by a 25-22 score. In the set the Leopards committed just a pair of attack errors on 21 swings and hit an impressive .571. However, Nazareth closed out the match with a 25-20 win.
As a team Wentworth hit .379 for the match and had two players record double figure kill totals. Junior Jake Reed (Arvada, Colo.) had 16 kills and hit .424 while sophomore Jon Roat (Macedon, N.Y.) hit .579 for the match as he registered 14 kills on 19 swings to go along with three blocks and eight digs. Mullen had nine kills and seven digs, junior Alex Potts (Niverville, N.Y.) hit .667 (7-1-9) and had four blocks, and McPeek had a career-high 44 assists to go along with six digs.
Sitting at 2-2, Wentworth hosts MIT on Tuesday night.
