No. 8 Men's Volleyball Downs Newbury in Straight Sets

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The No. 8 Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team swept Newbury College by set scores of 25-12, 25-18, 25-20 Thursday evening inside Pappas Gymnasium.

Wentworth rolls to its fourth straight win and improves to 4-1 overall, while Newbury drops its home opener and falls to 0-1.

The Leopards hit .368 in the first set, and took the Nighthawks down in a swift 20 minute-span. Newbury gave Wentworth resistance in the second and third sets, as the Leopards staged a comeback win in the middle frame to gain a 2-0 lead on the hosts. Newbury, which opened the set with the first point, didn't surrender the lead until a pair of attack errors gave Wentworth a 17-16 advantage. With sophomore Augusto Rodriguez-Guerrioson (Guaynabo, P.R.) on the serve, Wentworth scored the next eight of ten points to take the set, including two aces from classmate Ryan Love (Gaithersburg, Md.).

Both teams battled point-for-point in the final set, before freshman David Marsh (Springfield, Mass.) put the Leopards up for good, 19-18, as Wentworth closed the match on a 6-2 run.

Love led the Leopard attack with 10 kills and three service aces, and made just two errors on 26 swings for a .308 hitting percentage. Sophomore Xhuljo Zyba (Holbrook, Mass.) followed with seven kills and two aces, while Rodriguez-Guerrioson dished out 19 assists. Freshman Garrett Vermeulen (Fairport, N.Y.) paced Wentworth defensively with 11 digs.

Wentworth is back in action on Saturday, January 27 for its home opener against No. 10 NYU. First serve between the Violets and the Leopards is set for 2:00 p.m.
