Men's Volleyball Falls To Lasell In Five Sets

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team dropped a five-set decision to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Lasell College on Saturday afternoon inside the Lasell Athletic Center.

The Leopards wrap up the regular season at 21-10 and post an 11-3 record in the conference, while the Lasers finish at 9-20 and 6-9 against league opponents.

The Leopards hit a blistering .481 in the first set, and downed the hosts by a 25-20 set score. The Lasers fought back and grabbed a 25-21 win, before Lasell forced extra points in the third. Tied 24-24 after an attack error from Wentworth, a kill from sophomore Augusto Rodriquez-Guerrios (Guaynabo. P.R.), regained the Leopards' lead, 25-24, before back-to-back kills from freshman Kevin Devine (Charlotte, Vt.) sealed the 28-26 set win for Wentworth. The Lasers clawed back for a fourth set victory, as freshman Greg Monteiro (New Bedford, Mass.) and junior Andy Henriquez (Lawrence, Mass.) erased a 24-23 deficit, and forced a deciding set with the 26-24 win.

The Lasers doubled up on the Leopards early in the fifth set, as sophomore Scott Sterenberg (Oceanside, N.Y.) smashed a kill to give Lasell a 10-5 lead. The Leopards got three back on a Lasell attack error and a kill apiece from sophomore Josh Jaskson (Massillon, Ohio) and senior Ollie Oshman (Pennington, N.J.) but the Lasers scored the next three of five points to seal the 15-10 set, and the 3-2 match victory.

Devine led the Leopard attack with 12 kills, while Oshman hit .889 with eight kills on nine swings with zero errors. Jackson followed with nine kills of his own, and put down four service aces, while also collecting six digs in the effort. Senior Kevin McPeek (Bethleham, Pa.) held down the Wentworth defense with 12 digs, while Rodriquez-Guerrios served up 33 assists.

Wentworth is locked in at the No. 2 seed for the GNAC Postseason Tournament and earn a first-round bye. The Leopards await their semifinal fate to be played on Thursday, April 12 in Tansey Gymnasium.
