First Years Propel Men's Volleyball to Sweep over Newbury

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team defeated the Nighthawks of Newbury College, 3-0, in its home opener on Thursday evening inside Tansey Gymnasium. 

The Leopards relied on the newcomers of the 2019 squad, as freshman Drew Potter (Towson, Md.) hit .750% with nine kills on 12 attempts and added three service aces to his line in the victory. Classmate Drew Hesse (Eden, N.Y.) swung into three aces as well, as WIT registered 11 aces as a team.  

Wentworth hit .474 in the first set making just one error, as Potter led the charge on .500% hitting with five kills. With Adams on the serve, the Leopards jumped to a 6-0 lead, and soon extended the gap to double-digits, 15-5, after a Potter kill.  

The Nighthawks battled in the middle and closing sets, as sophomore Rory Dobbins (Warwick, R.I.) added a combined seven kills with a pair of digs to lead Newbury. Overall, Dobbins was one behind Potter with eight kills in the effort, while junior Michael Weston (West Greenwich, Conn.) followed with four kills, and hit .800% without committing a single error throughout the match. Sophomore Jeremias Soto (Lawrence, Mass.) dished out 13 assists, while classmate Geral Rivera-Miranda (Everett, Mass.) recorded a team-high seven digs. 

Juniors Scott Skarzynski (Webster, N.Y.) and Xhuljo Zyba (Holbrook, Mass.) swung into six kills apiece for Wentworth, as Skarzynski hit .556% on the night with one error on nine swings. Adams paced a defensive team effort with five digs, and set a career-high of 19 assists as Wentworth's primary setter. 

Wentworth (2-1) is off until next Thursday, January 31st, when the Leopards welcome Great Northeast Athletic Conference newcomer Colby-Sawyer. The conference opener is set for a 7:00 p.m. start inside Tansey Gym.
