Men's Volleyball Edged by Lasell

NEWTON, Mass. – Graduate student Ryan Love (Gaithersburg, Md.) and freshman Jacob LaBouliere (Pipersville, Pas.) each recorded 16 kills to lead four student-athletes in double figures as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Lasell on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Lasell jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set before Wentworth and extended its lead to 19-9 before Wentworth used a 10-3 run to 22-19 on a Laser attack error. However, the hosts scored the final three point of the set to take a 1-0 lead with a 25-19 win.
  • Wentworth took a 10-7 lead in the second set on a LaBouliere kill and led again, 12-9, after a senior David Marsh (Springfield, Mass.) kill. Lasell came back to tie the set at 17-all, however a 6-2 Wentworth run gave the Leopards a 23-19 lead after a kill from sophomore Colin Stockton (Hummelstown, Pa.) kill. The used a 6-1 run to take a 25-25 lead before the Black & Gold scored the next three points, with the set winning point coming on an ace from Stockton, to take a 27-25 win.
  • The Leopards hit a match-high .435 in the third set, leading wire-to-wire in a 25-14 win. Wentworth led 7-4 before using a 6-1 run which was capped off by a LaBouliere kill. Lasell scored the next four points to pull within four at 13-9, however, the Black & Gold closed out the set on a 12-5 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • Lasell raced out to a 9-3 lead in the fourth set but an 8-4 run by the Leopards closed the gap to 13-11. Love had four kills and a block during the run. A bad set brought the Leopards back to within two at 15-13 but the lasers scored six of the next nine points to take a 21-16 lead. Wentworth pulled back within two on three occasions, including on a LaBouliere kill which made it 24-22 but would get no closer as the hosts forced a fifth set.
  • The Lasers took a 7-3 lead early in the fifth set before a 6-2 Wentworth run evened the set at 9-all, thanks to a Lasell attack error. The teams traded points and Wentworth took a 12-11 lead on a block from graduate student Ryan Engel (Floral Park, N.Y.). However, Lasell rolled off three straight points and had match point at 14-12. LaBouliere and Marsh recorded back-to-back kills to make it 14-all and Wentworth had leads of 16-15, 17-16, and 18-17 before Lasell scored the final three points to take the match.
  • In addition to Love and LaBouliere, Marsh had 15 kills and five blocks and Engel added 13 kills. Freshman Anthony Krzykowski (Feeding Hills, Mass.) set 57 assists, and senior Peter Klembczyk (Penfield, N.Y.) had 25 digs.

THE SERIES

  • Today was the 45th all-time series meeting between the two programs. Wentworth holds a 27-18 series edge.
