Klembczyk Named First Team Academic All-American

BOSTON, Mass. – For the first time in Wentworth Institute of Technology history, a member of the Leopard men's volleyball program has been named an Academic All-American. Senior Peter Klembczyk (Penfield, N.Y.) achieved this honor as today he was named to the 2020-21 Academic All-America® Men's Division III At-Large Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Klembczyk was one of two Division III men's volleyball student-athletes to be named to the 15-person first team.

The 2020-21 Academic All-America® Division III At-Large Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in athletic competition and in the classroom.

A Computer Engineering major, Klembczyk becomes Wentworth's 12th Academic All-American (eighth first team selection) since 1995 and is the first Leopard student-athlete to earn this prestigious honor since 2015 when Sam Curran '15 was named the Division III Academic All-America of the Year in softball. Curran, a three-time Academic All-America selection, also was both a softball and women's volleyball Academic All-American in 2014.

Klembczyk helped the Leopards to an 8-3 record this past season which included earning the program's third NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Tournament berth and a final AVCA national ranking of No. 9. In 40 sets he averaged 3.12 digs per set which ranked him sixth among Division III student-athletes. In a 3-1 win over then No. 1 Springfield on April 10 he recorded 12 digs and became the program's all-time dig leader. Klembczyk was named a First Team AVCA All-American on the heels of being named to the AVCA's All-Region Team.

In addition to the honors bestowed upon him this season, Klembczyk was the 2018 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, a two-time All-GNAC selection, and earned AVCA All-Region honors in 2020. Three times he was named to the GNAC's All-Academic Team. Klembczyk played in 296 sets over the course of 88 matches and in addition to his program-leading 837 digs, he is also the program's leader in digs per set with 2.83.

The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
