Top Cats; Men's Volleyball Ascends to No. 1 Ranking
Leopards earn first-ever No. 1 ranking in school history after starting the season 2-0
BOSTON, Mass. – After starting the season with a 2-0 record, including a 3-2 win over No.1 and defending NCAA Division III champion Stevens Institute of Technology, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team has earned – for the first time in program history – the top ranking in the most recent AVCA/NVA Division III Poll, which was released Tuesday afternoon. The top spot in the coaches poll also marks the first time a Leopard team has been ranked No. 1 in any poll.
Wentworth earned 22 of 23 first-place votes, accumulating 459 of a possible 460 points. Rounding out the top five are Stevens, Cal Lutheran (one first-place vote), Southern Virginia, and St. John Fisher.
Since the 2000 season, this is the 76th week the program has been ranked in the AVCA poll, including 14 times being ranked in the top five. Prior to claiming the top spot this week, Wentworth's highest ranking was No. 2, which occurred last week.
The Black & Gold resume play this weekend, co-hosting the Fenway Volleyball Classic with Emmanuel College. On Saturday, the Leopards play Endicott and No. 13 New Paltz, while Wentworth squares off against Baruch and Nichols on Sunday.
