February 27, 2024
BOSTON, Mass. – The top-ranked Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team (16-0, 6-0 GNAC) continued their winning ways Tuesday night in Tansey Gym, breezing by conference opponent Emerson (2-9, 0-4 GNAC) in straight sets en route to their sixteenth straight win to open up the 2024 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A kill by junior Sam Etter (Massillon, Ohio) gave Wentworth a 2-1 edge in the first set before a kill by senior Tyler Jack (San Jose, Calif.) later pushed the advantage to 7-3. Emerson battled back, tying the score at eight-all, before kills by sophomores Benjamin Moughon (Mercer Island, Wash.) and Nicolai Bell (Moraga, Calif.) pushed the lead to 15-10. Two kills by Moughon helped extend the lead to 21-12 before a kill by Jack capped a 25-15 set win.
- The Black & Gold raced out to an 8-3 lead in the second set, thanks to two service aces and two kills by Jack, before a kill by junior Ryan Roller (West Hartford, Conn.) helped push the lead to 10-5. Kills by Etter and Roller extended the mark to 16-12 later in the set before a kill by Jack and service ace by Roller helped mark a 20-15 lead. Attack errors plagued the Lions in the final going, ultimately deciding a 25-18 set win for Wentworth.
- A kill by Jack capped a 5-0 run in the third set to give the hosts a 9-3 lead before two service aces by Roller pushed the advantage to 13-4. After three straight for the Lions, Wentworth rattled off another five straight, marking an 18-7 set. In the later going, two kills by junior Antonio Marino (California, Md.) and another by freshman Jeremy Macek (Pittsford, N.Y.) secured the Leopards with a 25-15 set win.
SERIES NOTES:
- The Leopards own the all-time series, 26-2, with their last loss to the Lions dating back to 2013.
NEXT UP:
- Wentworth is in idle until traveling to California for the Cal-Lu-fornia Classic on March 8-9, where they are set to play three nationally ranked programs in No. 6-ranked Cal Lutheran, No. 15-ranked Marymount (Va.), and No. 18-ranked UC Santa Cruz.
