#11 Men's Volleyball Fends Off MIT
Five Leopards register eight or more kills as Leopards hold off Engineers in four sets; Conner Foxwell records eight finishes, six block assists and one solo
BOSTON, Mass. – Five student-athletes with eight putaways or more helped the No. 11-ranked Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team fend off the MIT Engineers in a four-set battle inside Tansey Gym Friday night.
The Black & Gold improve to 20-4 on the season while the Engineers slip down to .500 at 12-12.
Tonight's triumph marks the fourth straight season in which the Leopards have won 20 or more contests. Additionally, Wentworth has now grabbed 20 or more wins for the 11th time since 2011.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The two teams swapped scores to open the first set with a finish by Andrew Ahn helping mark a 6-4 lead for the Leopards. A kill by Jacob Waga marked an 11-11 draw later on before kills by Ahn and Mason Andrade marked a 16-15 edge. MIT fired back to take a 21-19 edge before kills by Waga and Ahn marked a tie at 23-23. Two finishes by Andrade helped Wentworth escape the first set with a 26-24 win.
- The two teams again traded points in the early going of the second set until a slew of errors marked a 7-4 lead for Wentworth. Finishes by Andrade and Nicolai Bell helped extend the lead to 11-6 later on before kills by Ahn, Waga, and Andrade pushed the set to 16-12. Two finishes from Bell helped mark a 21-16 advantage before a final strike from Waga clinched a 25-17 set win.
- After the two teams swapped scores to begin the third set, MIT pulled away with a 9-5 advantage before continuing it to 15-10. Kills from Waga and Ahn cut the deficit by two before the Engineers later marked a 19-14 advantage. Two kills from Alem Dubcak helped dwindle the deficit further at 20-17 and, while kills by Bell, Ahn, and Conner Foxwell helped keep the Leopards close, MIT pulled away with a 25-20 set win.
- Wentworth kicked off the fourth frame with a 6-1 run before two putaways from Foxwell marked a 9-4 advantage. Two kills from Ian Babcock helped extend the lead to 15-9 before a slew of errors marked a 20-15 lead for Wentworth. A Bell finish marked a 22-17 advantage before a Foxwell kill ultimately claimed the Leopards a 25-19 set win.
SERIES NOTES:
- The Leopards have taken three straight matchups versus the Engineers, previously besting them on March 8.
