Softball Suffers Setback at Emmanuel

BOSTON, Mass. - Freshman Ashley Skey (Brookline, N.H.) launched a three-run homer that snapped a 1-1 tie to lift the Emmanuel College softball team to a 4-1 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a weather-shortened contest played at Clemente Field.

With the win the Saints improve to 7-4 while the Leopards fall to 4-7.

Emmanuel plated its first run of the game on a triple rocketed down the right field line by junior Catherine Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.) in its half of the second frame. Senior Heather Pinkston (Concord, Calif.) crossed home plate on a wild pitch that put Wentworth on the board and squared the score at 1-1 after three.

After the Leopards evened up the game, they threatened to break the tie after freshman Kathleen Dunn's (Hull, Mass.) single to center and a walk to sophomore Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.), but a fly ball to right ended the inning.

With one out and two runners on the bags, the Saints managed to break the tie on a go-ahead three-run bomb from Skey to seal the Leopards' fate as Emmanuel took the 4-1 triumph.

Freshman Hayley Rutkey (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) allowed one run and three walks with one strike out through 1.1 innings, while freshman Erica Norquist (Rutland, Mass.) was tagged with the loss after she pitched 3.2 innings in relief and allowed three runs on five hits while she struck out two and walked one. Dunn went 1-for-3 with a single.

Junior Jill Kilcoyne (Worcester, Mass.) earned the win for the Saints as she pitched a solid five innings and allowed one run on one hit while she punched out 10 batters and walked eight. Skey led the Saints offense, going 1-for-2 with one run scored and three RBI.

Wentworth returns home to face Simmons on Wednesday, March 30, for a 3:30 doubleheader while Emmanuel travels to UMass Boston on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
